Understanding Your Tooth
The term refers to part of the tooth — the procedure itself is called endodontic therapy.
A "root canal" is not a treatment — it is part of a tooth. It is the hollow section that contains nerve tissue, blood vessels, and other cells, also known as the pulp.
A tooth consists of a crown (mainly above the gum) and roots (below the gum) that attach the tooth to the jawbone. Inside the crown and roots is the pulp, which nourishes the tooth and helps sense hot and cold temperatures as pain.
The dental procedure commonly called a "root canal" is actually endodontic therapy — meaning "inside the tooth."
Step by Step

Local anaesthetic is placed so the area is comfortable before treatment begins.
A small opening is made and fine instruments remove infected pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals.
The canal space is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate bacteria.
Root canals are sealed with a biocompatible filling material (usually gutta-percha).
You return to your dentist for a permanent filling or crown to protect and restore the tooth.
Treatment may be completed in a single visit or across two appointments, depending on your tooth.
Clinical Guidance
Treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. Left untreated, this can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Cavities that reach the pulp can cause inflammation or infection.
Multiple treatments on the same tooth can irritate or damage the pulp over time.
Fractures may allow bacteria to enter and infect the pulp chamber.
A blow to a tooth may damage the pulp even when no visible crack is present.
Tooth Preservation
With modern techniques and anaesthetics, most patients report being comfortable throughout treatment.
Mild sensitivity for a few days is common, especially if there was pain or infection beforehand. Over-the-counter or prescribed medication can help.
